THE PROS AND CONS OF CHOOSING BLACK GROUT- What You Need To Know.

Nothing elevates a simple white subway tile (or, frankly, an already elevated tile) like your grout color and application. Whether you are looking for a monochromatic black tile with black grout look, or a way to showcase the humble white tile, black grout may be the way to go.

This seemingly small design decision packs a punch. Tile with dark grout is becoming increasingly popular in many design styles, from modern farmhouse bathroom walls to minimalistic kitchen backsplashes. If you're considering black grout for your next project, here are a few things to keep in mind. The debate of black grout vs. white grout has been around for years, and we're finally weighing in. Here are the pros and cons of choosing black grout and some tips on keeping it looking its best.

The Pros Of Choosing Black Grout

A STATEMENT MAKER - white tile with black grout

A simple way to elevate the humble white subway tile is to throw caution to the wind and swap the expected white grout for a darker shade. An easy way to add a little drama and nice contrast to bathroom floors or shower walls. Plus, this pairing is a classic combination that works perfectly with modern farmhouse interior design themes. Keep your paint selection subdued so that black grout can take center stage.

SHOWCASES YOUR TILE SIZE AND SHAPE - your tile pattern and tile size matter

By selecting a light-colored tile with dark grout, you will bring more attention to the size and shape of your tile. Your tiled wall and floor tiles will become more of a focal point. Whether you have selected a hex, penny, or subway tile; the contrast between the two colors will make the grout line around your tiles an intentional feature of the space.

CREATES BOLD DESIGN GRID PATTERNS

When you are thinking about the shape of the tile to use in your design, consider how it will look with the other elements in your space. For example, if you are using white tiles with black grout, it will create a grid-like pattern. If you want this grid to be the dominant pattern in your design, keep the other elements (such as flooring and cabinetry) more restrained.

BLACK ON BLACK FOR SOME SERIOUS SOPHISTICAT - with black tiles and black grout

A subdued way to add some monochromatic style. Go big or go home, right? This bathroom tile and contemporary kitchen backsplash idea is one that can be found in some of the most luxurious bathrooms and spas. You definitely need a little bit of commitment to pull this look off, but if you are all in; black grout or dark gray grout with a darker tile color can make quite the impression. To pull off this look, think about choosing tiles that have movement or variation in their finish to provide some depth and interest.

CLASSIC AND TIMELESS - white tiles with black grout

A go-to for many interior designers, affordably elevate any space with classic white subway tiles or mosiac tiles and black grout. You can use this color scheme regardless of the tile's base color. For a timeless look, consider installing a white subway tile backsplash or stark white shower tiles with black grout.

Cons Of Going With Black Grout

Here's what you need to know before committing; while black grout is absolutely stunning when it’s first installed, it can quickly become a small cleaning nightmare and challenging to maintain.

Take a minute and consider where you want to use black grout before making a decision. For example, if you're thinking about using it on a kitchen backsplash, then maintenance probably won't be as much of an issue since kitchens aren't usually too dirty or wet. However, surfaces like a shower area and or around a bathtub that see more water and dirt on a regular basis will require more upkeep.

IT’S TRICKY TO INSTALL - hire a professional

Choosing black grout may not be the best idea if you're looking for a low-maintenance option. It's important to remember that black grout can be very messy and difficult to clean up. Grout is similar to kinetic sand in texture—it's gritty, and it can go everywhere, even with the most experienced professional. And because there's such a contrast between the tile and grout color-wise, any mistake will stand out. So installation must be perfect to create an even, polished look. You might consider hiring a seasoned professional for your tiling job.

DOES BLACK GROUT FADE?

Yes, unfortunately, black grout experiences fading over time. Grout is highly porous and will stain unless properly sealed. This is true of all grout colors (including lighter grout ). Even sealed grout, over time, won't prevent ugly stains from reappearing in areas where it is exposed to more water exposure.

DOES BLACK GROUT SHOW DIRT?

Black grout doesn’t necessarily show dirt, but it definitely can get dirty. It can be challenging to keep clean, especially if it’s in an area that is either high in foot traffic or is near a lot of water. The most crucial thing after grouting your tile, especially if your black grout will be in a bathroom or on a floor, is to seal it properly.

HOW DO YOU CLEAN BLACK GROUT? - how do you keep black grout looking black?

Black grout always looks amazing on the day of installation, but if it's located in an area with a lot of water exposure, it will lose its luster over time. If you have your heart set on a home with black grout or already installed it and noticed some wear, don't fret--you can take steps to restore its original look.

Wondering how to clean black grout? Once you have sealed your grout, use a neutral pH everyday product for cleaning, this will also extend the life of your sealing efforts. Any other cleaner will damage the sealant over time and make it wear down faster. Eventually, there could be a noticeable lightening of your black grout's color or make it look more like dark grey concrete. Your grout may always appear black from a distance, but over time it can lose some of its luster and depth of color if not properly cleaned.

SHOULD BLACK GROUT BE SEALED?

Yes, black grout should be sealed. It's a porous material that has the potential to absorb dirt and moisture if it isn't properly sealed. Sealing black grout can help protect its color and improve its overall appearance. Additionally, sealing black grout will make it easier to clean and prolong its lifespan.

You can do this project yourself by choosing the correct grout sealer. We recommend the Aqua Mix brand, the sealer most commonly recommended by tile professionals.

Why Is My Black Grout Turning White?

If not appropriately sealed, black grout may quickly start to look white when a harsh cleaning product is used. Use a neutral cleaner to prevent this and ensure the grout is correctly sealed.

When your grout has reached this point, follow the directions to clean it and see if that helps. If the shade remains discolored, consider using a black grout pen or hiring a qualified restoration business as your last resort.

By sealing your grout correctly, you can be sure that it will remain vibrant and protected for a more extended period. Be sure to give the area at least two days before using the shower after sealing, then switch to a gentle neutral cleaner when cleaning from there. With this process in place, you'll have beautiful tile work with minimal upkeep!

Do Grout Pens Work?

Yes! Grout pens can easily and quickly change the color of your grout without any prep work necessary. The best part is that they can be used on any tile, including waterproof tiles in high-traffic areas or areas with a lot of water. Once the "ink" dries, it will be permanent; however, resealing the grout afterward will make it last longer.

Are Grout Pens Permanent?

Yes and no. They’re permanent in the sense that once they dry, the ink is waterproof and won’t come off easily. However, if you use a black grout pen and then decide you want white grout again (or vice versa), you do have the option to repaint over the black grout with a white grout pen!

We’re not trying to dissuade you from choosing black grout. We want to make sure you go into the decision with your eyes wide open. Maintaining black grout is not for the faint of heart.

You will need to commit to a little bit of elbow grease if you want your black grout to look fabulous all the time. But if you’re up for the challenge, black grout can make a stunning design statement in your home.
