Let's explore why these sizes are the sweet spot and how you can style your furniture to work seamlessly with them.

You need to consider two things when shopping for a queen bed rug size; the size of your bed and your room size. That’s it! By keeping those two factors top of mind, you’ll be sure to find a rug that looks great and is the perfect size for your space. Here, we deep dive into the world of bedroom area rugs, sharing everything you need to know before making your next purchase.

What Are The Benefits Of Having A Bedroom Rug?

Yep, we know there is no mistaking the benefits a layer of rugs brings to your bedroom. But in case you needed a reminder, here are just a few reasons why we think rugs are an essential design element in any bedroom.

  • Soften hard flooring

  • Create a defined space in an open floor plan

  • Add color and pattern to a neutral room

  • Anchor furniture

  • Create a focal point

  • Incorporate luxurious natural fibers such as wool or silk into your room design

  • Absorb sound

General Guidelines For Selecting Ideal Rug Size - how to choose the right size rug

Let's take a minute to stand back, look at our room dimensions and furniture placement, and design a plan for the entire room. Here are some considerations you'll want to take into account.

  • As a general rule of thumb, a rug under a queen bed should extend 18-24 inches beyond the sides of your bed.

  • Queen beds measure 60 inches wide, so your bedroom rug should be 78-84 inches wide or about 8 feet wide. The length of a queen bed is 80 inches long. With the head of your bed or bed frame against the wall, you only need to extend the rug 18-24 inches beyond the foot of the bed, giving you a rug that is 8-9 feet long.

  • Keep 10-20 inches of bare floor space between the sides of the rug and walls to ensure you can easily move around the bedroom and give your furniture some breathing room.

Standard Size Rugs

Good news, most retailers manufacture standard-sized rugs that will fit a queen bed. The two most common rug sizes for a queen size bed are;

  • 5' x 8' - a five-foot by eight-foot rug (also called a "five-eight" or "five by eight")

  • 6' x 9' - a six-foot by nine-foot rug (also called a six by nine)

  • 8' x 10' - an eight-foot by ten-foot rug (also called an "eight-ten" or "eight by ten")

5' x 8' RUG - THE MINIMUM RUG SIZE

When it comes to the best rug sizes for under queen size beds, it's all about finding the right fit. Smaller rugs like 5' x 8' are perfect for a smaller room, and it is the minimum size we would recommend. Not only is it a budget-friendly option, but it also won't take up too much real estate in a smaller bedroom. Get creative with the placement, too - scoot it closer to your bedside tables, or let it peek out from the foot of your bed. Pro tip: extending the rug about 18 inches beyond the foot of the bed adds a touch of finesse and shows off that stunning rug you picked out.

6’x9′ RUG - A LITTLE MORE GENEROUS

The 6×9 resize area rug is a great choice if you want more coverage on the sides of your queen bed. To maximize this effect, place the area rug under the bed but not underneath your nightstands - that way, it can stretch beyond just the foot of the bed!

8' x 10' RUG - THE IDEAL RUG SIZE

With more rug to love, opting for an 8ft x 10ft rug is a perfect choice and works with most bedroom sizes. Unless your room size or budget is limited, this size provides excellent coverage and versatility. You can place an 8’×10’ rug under your nightstands sufficiently, and it will cover the floor on all sides of the bed. This rug size also works best if you have wider nightstands that you want to fit on top of your rug.

An 8×10 rug is an ideal size for a larger room; you can easily place it beyond the foot of your bed, leaving room to add a bench! Simply move the rug so that your nightstands are on the floor and not on top, providing plenty of space at the end. This way, you’ll have enough area to accommodate both pieces with ease.

While we are fans of bigger is better keep in mind the size of your room and your door swing. This rug size works well in larger rooms. Selecting a rug that is too large for your space will make the bedroom look small and crowded.

RUNNER RUGS - A LITTLE SOMETHING SOFT UNDERFOOT

Runners typically come in standard sizes of 2' x 6', 2' x 8', and 3' x 10'. These sizes are narrow and long, making them perfect for placing in tight spaces such as hallways, staircases, and entryways. However, they can also be used in bedrooms, particularly with a queen-sized bed. To place runner rugs on either side of a queen bed, a 2' x 8' or 3' x 10' size is recommended, providing enough coverage for both sides of the bed without overwhelming the space.

Stylish Rug Placement Ideas

When placing your new rug in a room, there are various options to choose from. The rug size you select will play a big role in determining the best placement. The furniture placement options are also affected by the size of the rug you select. You can place your furniture on top of the rug or around it depending on the size and the look you want to achieve. Below are the different ways you can place a rug, and the different furniture placement options that are available based on the size of your rug selection, so you can create a cohesive and stylish space that is tailored to your personal preference and needs.

Place A Rug At The Foot Of Your Bed

With a room design that may include a sitting area or an accent chair, a 5'x8' or 6'x9' rug will work best at the end of a bed. Place lengthwise with two inches under the feet of the bedframe to show off the rug's design.

Place Rug Underneath The Bed NOT Under Nightstands

Place a 6'9’ or 8' x 10' rug beneath the bottom portion of your bed. Make sure to evenly spread it on either side so that the nightstands are not sitting atop it. This nifty trick will also help create some breathing space around the foot of the bed, providing an airy and spacious feel and will create a “frame” around the lower part of your bed.

Place Rug Underneath The Bed AND Nightstands

Try layering an 8’ x 10' rug underneath both the bed and nightstands. Not only will this add depth and texture to the room but it also provides enough coverage for all furniture pieces.

Placing A Round Rug Under Your Queen Bed

Round rugs add an unexpected focal point to a bedroom. Round rugs are less common than rectangular rugs, so they can make a statement. To place a round rug under your king bed, center it in the room with equal amounts of bare floor showing on all sides. You can also offset the rug so that it’s not directly under the bed but still centered in the room. This will create a more intimate feeling in your bedroom.

Tips For Non-Standard Rooms & Layouts

Not all bedrooms are created equal. If you have a non-standard room or layout, here are a few tips and ides to keep in mind when choosing a rug size and placement:

IF ONE SIDE OF YOUR BED IS AGAINST ONE WALL

You might want to consider a 5-foot by 8-foot rug. Place it lengthwise with a couple of inches of the rug under the open side of the bed. This will help to create an illusion of more space in the room and will also keep your feet warm when you get out of bed in the morning!

IF YOUR ROOM ALREADY HAS CARPETED FLOORS OR WALL-TO-WALL CARPETING

If wall to wall carpet has got you stumped on the rug decision front, we can help. If you just want a rug under your feet, consider layering two rugs in a 5-foot by 8-foot or 6-foot by 9-foot size rug placed lengthwise at the end of the bed. Make sure that there's enough clearance on either side of the bed so you can still open and close your bedroom door!

IF YOU JUST WANT SOME RUG UNDERNEATH YOUR FEET

You might want to consider a smaller rug that can be placed at the side of your bed. Consider two 8-foot-long runners on each side of the bed. Keep a few inches of bare floor between the edge of the rug and the side of the bed. This will give you the benefits of a rug without overwhelming your space.

A Word About Rug Pads

While we're on the topic of rugs, let's talk about rug pads. A rug pad is essential for two reasons: to prevent slipping and to protect your hardwood floors. We recommend you layer rugs over a rug pad at least one-fourth inch thick and made of felt or rubber. Be sure to get a size that is slightly smaller than your area rug so that it doesn't show on the sides.

Interior Designers Tip - Mark It Out With Painter's Tape

If you're unsure whether a particular size will work in your space, lay down some painter's tape or use masking tape to mark off the dimensions on your floor. This will give you a good sense of how much space the rug will occupy and whether it will be too small or too large for your bed size.
